SUSTAINABILITY

The Killingworth Castle is an independent, family-run public house. We are proud to be at the centre of the community we serve, and aim to continually improve the sustainability of our operations for our team, customers and future generations of pub-goers!

Our Main Impacts:

We recognise how our business impacts society and the environment:

  • Our Communities (staff, customers, neighbours)

  • Food & Drink Sourcing (food miles & farming practices)

  • Travel (by staff and customers)

  • Building Energy Use (heat & electricity)

  • Waste Generation (waste food, recyclables etc)

  • Water Consumption (pubs, catering, accommodation)

Our Aims:

Building Energy and Water Use

We measure and reduce heating and electricity carbon impacts across the business by improving the energy efficiency of our buildings/ plant by opting for green energy tariffs and by exploring on-site energy generation. We measure and reduce water consumption where possible.

Waste Generation

We reduce, reuse and recycle waste, minimising disposal to landfill or energy recovery, by reviewing waste supplier performance, fully segregating waste streams and engaging our supply chain on packaging. Our kitchen oil is recycled and turned into bio-diesel.

Food and Drink Sourcing

We source our food from certified organic sources where possible, using meat with high welfare standards and fish from MSC certified sources. We have been awarded 3 Stars Organic by the Soil Association for their commitment to getting organic food on the menu and our wine and spirits offering is predominantly organic and from independent producers.

We source food as local and seasonal as possible to reduce food transport miles and work with suppliers to reduce the number of deliveries needed. Food products imported from developing countries will be certified fair-trade.

Travel

We recognise the drive to electric vehicles and provide an electric vehicle charging point for staff and customer use.
